Queen James
Waddell Media | BBC One Northern Ireland & BBC Two
Queen James (1 x 60’), airing on BBC One Northern Ireland on 17th June and BBC Two at 9pm on 18th June, explores the life, loves and relationships of the monarch whose deep affection for young handsome men shaped both his personal life and political reign
Inspired by historian Gareth Russell’s acclaimed book, the documentary re-examines one of Britain’s most misunderstood kings and explores how his relationships with male favourites influenced the monarchy, court politics and wider British history. The film also delves into the scandal, gossip and public fascination that surrounded James during his reign, exploring how the nickname “Queen James” became intertwined with both his public image and personal identity.
While many people know James through the King James Bible, the Gunpowder Plot and his role as the first monarch to unite the crowns of Scotland, England and Ireland, the documentary explores a far less familiar side of the king - one which many historians argue was downplayed or rewritten by later generations.
The film features King James’s tender love letters voiced by James McArdle and combines rich historical storytelling with fresh insight into sexuality, power and identity in the royal court.
Alongside Gareth Russell, the documentary also features contributions from leading historians and scholars including Tracy Borman, Professor Clare Jackson, Dr Steven Veerapen, Lucy Hughes-Hallett, Leanda de Lisle and Will Tosh.
